A Matter of Position — The Sex Layer in JAVs

Published : May 28th, 2021 Written by vienna

Hello everyone! It's vienna, and it's a pleasure to be here with you again. This article represents the last piece, the final part of my very first series on JAVs on the ZENRA blog, "Why Do You Enjoy JAVs?", in which we explore the reasons, articulated as layers of a "pleasure model", why so many people from all over the world enjoy and rejoice in this great passion of ours. I've always loved to share the reasons why I enjoy something, as seen in my previous articles, and I intend to continue that purpose. This is the last part of the series, and in particular we're going to look at the more direct and raw aspect that intercedes for the viewer's eye, and that is enhanced by the tools and enhancements provided by the production and presentation layers, which we discussed in depth in Best JAV Clothings - The Presentation Layer and in What's Behind The Camera - The Production Layer.

The "Sex Layer" and The "Model of Pleasure"

The "sex layer" is the core of JAVs. It is the reason why the end user enjoys and uses the product. It is a fundamental layer and one that can exist on its own; instead, the presentation layer and the production layer, coexist and act in support of the sex layer: the main objective of this section of the pleasure model proposed by JAVs (but actually employed, by extension, to any adult film product) is to structure the sex scenes, organize them in a script consistent with the proposed storytelling, and offer it to the user in different forms and rhythms according to the director's idea, the creative cue referred to, or even simply the dynamics most appropriate to the positions, sex toys, fetishes, kinks to be put in place and so on.

Hitomi is clearly someone's favourite here, and I clearly see two big reasons why. Jokes aside, she's a great actress with tons of work on her resume. A monolith of JAV as a whole, she never disappoints.

It is not at all the case that the sex layer must propose sex that is necessarily consistent with the context or setting, as left intended in the article devoted to the presentation layer. The sex layer coincides, in fact, with the content of the film itself. Let's put it this way: the sex layer is what the user sees and uses, the presentation layer is the way the production - perhaps through clothing, settings and so on - wants to propose the content to the user, while the production layer concerns the more genuinely technical aspects related to the creation of a JAV: lighting, direction (even if in this case it puts a foot in the presentation layer), sound design, video quality and much more. Although some of these aspects are more intuitive than others, and indeed some may seem unimportant, in fact everything listed here contributes to the creation of an excellent JAV: from its birth in the production studio, to its fruition by the user on electronic devices -- everything that the pleasure model, as noted, is a how-to to the development of a JAV: guidelines, to be clear, that are in fact just guidelines, and not fundamental requirements. In my experience with this kind of media, all three layers of the pleasure model are fundamental to ensuring that a certain film is not junkyard junk, but something I'm going to revisit from time to time.

Let's take an example: we have a studio that hires in actresses who are considered exceptionally capable and likable, and thus composes a formidable cast that rivals that of the best JAVs on the market. Exceptional. In addition, they select the setting and costumes with great care, the studio also makes its own judgments on more marginal aspects such as storytelling (although this marginality depends very much on the target audience -- for me, for example, narrative is a key aspect of JAVs) and so on; however, the studio does not invest in adequate lighting, professional equipment, and instrumentation appropriate to the film: the result is a product that is technically shoddy, but features phenomenal sex with stunning actresses -- but at the end of the day, what am I going to do with mind-blowing sex scenes if... I can't understand what's happening on screen? Obviously, this is a hypothetical case -- most of the production studios we feature on the blog have been in the market for years and know this craft like it's a Renaissance art, but I'm sure the message got through.

Julia is good with or without glasses, with or without sockings, but also with or without clothes on. Either way, she's truly an icon.

In any case, returning to the main topic covered in this article, namely the sex layer in particular, I want to emphasize how the choice of cast (which is a key component in the success or failure of this layer) is an important step for JAV to be successful. Now, there are generally few actresses that I don't think are up to some roles or that I would disqualify for some poor performances, but it is also true that I am human and my knowledge is limited to what I have personally seen with my own eyes.

The Pleasure Comes From Competence

We have already mentioned that the sex layer, and thus the content itself of a JAV, is undeniably affected by the presence of more or less competent actresses. When it comes to famous and universally acclaimed actresses who are identified as the best in the industry, it's no surprise that their mere presence in a cast can turn the quality of a JAV upside down and raise the bar considerably for all the competition: such is the case with Julia and Hitomi, two figures who are loved and praised across the board by production studios and fans alike, and whose skills and countless mind-boggling performances combine to form a unique resume in the industry. Personally, I think Hitomi needs no special introduction. In fact, she's one of the most highly regarded longtime actresses on this blog: suffice it to say that Panking has long been on a marathon review of all the films in which Hitomi has been featured over the years (I particularly suggest the rankings related to 2020, 2011 and 2012, which I have found to be very interesting reads); Oppaira also included her in its recent list of most beautiful actresses, in which Julia also appears, of whom mentioning further positive remarks and admiration on my part and on the part of the blog in general would make this article really too long -- but she undoubtedly appears in many of our articles, such as the now well-known series of Gargoyle's monthly most appreciated JAVs, in March 2021.

Finally, as a special mention we have Yua Mikami, my favorite JAV actress. I literally included her in my most important pieces as well as the first ones on this blog, such as "Are Virtual Reality JAVs Worth It?", my tribute to the end of Daft Punk's career in "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" and also in the piece I hold most dear, namely "Huge JAV Loads: An Almost Scientific Analysis". It would actually take a scientific analysis to understand how Yua Mikami and her performances manage to flip and improve immensely in film after film, and it gets better and better.

Yua Mikami is a lovely, beautiful actress that does her best in every movie she performes in. I've been watching JAVs in which she's featured in for years, yet I've still to watch a bad movie of hers.

In any case, it's not just the actresses that make the content itself of a JAV good or bad, but also what the actresses actually do: sex -- hence the name of the layer. Sex is what we're here for, at the end of the day. Blowjobs, penetrations, use of toys, various and sundry fetishes, whatever comes to mind for the director and actors. Be it loud and explicit, or sweet and loving; or pressing and steady, or cautious and rhythmic, almost musical. Is the film a constant having sex in the kitchen and living room, or is it accompanied by more or less short storytelling episodes to give the film some context? What kind of context, exactly, are we talking about? How are the sex scenes articulated, and what kind of frequency are they presented to the user? These and many other questions characterize the sex layer. The ways in which the cast fucks and acts is crucial. If you're aiming for immersion, then the setting might take center stage, and the presentation layer will prove crucial for the viewer to enjoy the JAV content more. Instead, if you're taking the line of most mid-range JAVs, where storytelling is cast aside in favor of mere moments of acrid sex and nothing else, then to hell with costumes and setting, it's definitely more important to focus on production quality and cast and sex.

This is, in a nutshell, how I envisioned the sex layer in my imaginative pleasure model, and how it interfaces and interacts with the presentation and production layers. There's definitely more to say about sex in JAVs, but I think I've said what I wanted to say. Sex is not the only thing that I enjoy in JAVs. I think JAVs are way more than that, and I also believe that they can prove very valid products for many other aspects. The sex layer, in the end, is just a way to convey feelings and emotions, presented in a certain way and highlighted by the cast's ability and performance. Anyway, sex is sex -- and it's good.

That's all for today, folks. If you wish to know more about this weird “model of pleasure” that I am babbling about, please refer to “Why Do You Enjoy JAVs?” which summarizes my opinions and thoughts on what makes a JAV a truly great experience. Please note that these are mostly experimental articles, but I still hope that you all enjoyed the article and the series. Thank you for sticking with me once again to the very end, and see you next time!
