How More Music Could Improve JAV

Published : January 15th, 2025 Written by Syndrome

Introduction

While JAV is lauded for its highly diverse creativity, sexiness, and genuine good quality, there is one element to it that I often find to be lacking - the music! Music is mostly only ever heard at the start of a movie, or during transition scenes, or maybe during a scene where there is no sex happening. A lot of the time, music is completely omitted from sex scenes (or just a whole JAV in entirety), and I believe that to be a humongous waste of potential.

I'm going to discuss how making use of more music in JAV can elevate the viewing experience and allow for a more entertaining spectacle.

The Purpose of Music

Music is a highly powerful tool that isn't exclusive to any one form of entertainment. It can elevate emotional moments and set the mood, can be used to ease a watcher into the next scene, and can even be used to suggest how a watcher should feel at a precise moment. Certain characters or types of moments could have an iconic soundtrack attached to them, and some music could even make certain scenes more impactful and memorable, like timing a climactic part of a song with an action performed by a character, or having something rhythmic happen in the music to match something rhythmic happening on-screen, like say, riding on horseback.

While a lot of JAV usually don't contain a complex enough story where music can be used in a way that is emotionally impacting, it can be used in a multitude of different ways, such as to increase the sensuousness of a sex scene, or make the female actresses more charming.

Heightening Emotional Moments

Actresses: Sarina Momonaga:

One of the most obvious ways that music can enhance entertainment (and additionally, JAV) is by complimenting a particularly pivotal scene. Say a JAV is slowly building up tension, suggesting that the main heroine's husband may be cheating. Then finally, the wife finds out the truth, which is that the husband IS cheating - a proper musical score could more greatly emphasize the betrayal and the likely melancholic moment. The music before and leading up to that major moment could rise in intensity throughout the movie, adding more suspense and intrigue.

Music could also be applied to sex scenes as well (which seems to be a little more common in western porn), naturally enhancing the sensuousness and giving the watcher a more relaxed sensation. Of course, it doesn't all have to be melodic pianos and soft melodies - several different types of music are surprisingly effective at enhancing the sexual stimulation of watchers during a sex scene, allowing for JAV to get really creative, and possibly inspiring a new favorite/fetish in some.

Heck, a JAV could have actresses dressed up as clowns, and the music could involve a lot of honks and odd noises - this is JAV after all, such weirdness is a staple, and honestly, any type of music would be worth having, as most JAV I've watched have rarely any to begin with.

The music can also reflect what is specifically happening in the sex scene, such as by having a more rhythmic beat during the penetration. If the thrusting is getting more and more intense, the music could steadily grow more intense as well, with things getting climactic as the actors reach orgasm. In my personal opinion, this is one of the best ways in which music can make scenes more erotic. Ero-anime on occasion even makes use of this trick, such as with Shinkyoku no Grimoire (episode 2):

World-Building

Actresses: Mayu Sasa:

Music can also be used to help establish the world in which the JAV happens to be set. A proper soundtrack could make the setting more convincing and atmospheric. A JAV set in a cyberpunk world could be complemented by an electronic soundtrack, and it would also make sex scenes more unique by not sticking to the same "sensuous and soft" type of music. Meanwhile, a JAV set in a specific era of the past could include period-appropriate instruments. This not only betters the viewer's enjoyment but also helps possibly give JAV a chance to stand toe-to-toe with non-pornographic media in terms of production quality.

It Can Help Establish a Style

Actresses: Chinami Sakura:

With musical artists and musicians, there are some who are known for specific genres or a particular style, and this could become something notable with JAV creators too. JAV could use specific music or themes with a particular series or actors to help them establish a more memorable identity. Possessing a style that watchers will know instantly upon listening can help to make a series or creator more recognizable.

For actors/actresses, producing a specific type of soundtrack for them could also help to accentuate their personality or charm, or for story-driven works, help to better emphasize their personality in accordance to the story or theme. An actress known for highly playful roles might have more upbeat songs, while an actress who specializes in darker or more dramatic works might be known for performing to songs that are more atmospheric or moody.

Talking about memorability, music can also help to keep things feeling fresh. While JAV's main "appeal" is usually the sex scenes, sex in itself is repetitive, and thus, sex scenes back-to-back can sometimes feel repetitive when not much thought is put into them. Music is one tool in which sex scenes can differ and be more appealing. A scene could just have basic vaginal penetration, and then the next scene has pretty much the exact same in terms of sex, but it FEELS different and unique because of the specific soundtrack used.

Allows For Better Transitions

Actresses: Monaka Sengoku:

Transitions between scenes in JAV can be pretty dry and uneventful, making things feel a bit abrupt. Music is the perfect tool for helping make these moments feel more natural. Usage of a track that perhaps evolves with the developing story and acts as a guide in terms of the tone or setting, and possibly without being too jarring to take viewers out of the experience might elevate the movie's quality.

Videos that are more comedic in nature or not very serious could use lighthearted and happy music, and then shift to something more lusty as things progress sex-wise. Use of such music can help keep watchers engaged and not feel taken out due to rather sudden tonal shifts or transitions between scenes.

A Next Step Up in Artistry

Actresses: Ena Satsuki:

Some people look at porn and JAV and just dismiss it as "degenerative filth" or just a "bunch of sex" - but JAV is so much more, and a lot of JAV creators are striving to give it that "next step up" in terms of quality and what it offers (beyond mere stimulation). Once again, music could be the next step in achieving this. By working together with musicians (be them indie or reputed composers), JAV could distance itself from the stigma of being "purely fap material", and demonstrate that it can be capable of artistic storytelling. Some JAV are already experimenting with cinematography and boosting the narrative, but original music might help to push the boundaries further.

It Might Be Difficult

Actresses: Hinako Mori:

All that being said about how more music could be a definite positive improvement, there is still naturally the challenges of implementing it. Most obviously is the cost of getting more music, and getting music of the right quality and style that is desired would likely only be that much more costly. Then there's also the fact that this might be uncharted territory for JAV creators, so getting the music just right, like getting the perfect soundtrack for one scene, or balancing the music with the dialogue, or making sure the music is fitting and not overwhelming - it could be a massive challenge. They might even mess things up completely, and then not ever want to try and risk it again, preferring to stay safe and use what works.

I can say with 100% certainty though, that exploring this realm is absolutely worth it. I've heard music in western porn and have watched things like "porn music videos" and "hentai music videos" (HMVs), and can attest that music can definitely make erotica more stimulating and investing. So in the very least, using it to make the sex scenes more erotic should make it something to be considered.

Conclusion

JAV absolutely needs more music. If not for the bottom line that intercourse appeals to every one of the human senses and thus should be used to make sex scenes more erotic, then for the fact that music can improve things on a more atmospheric level. Music can heighten emotional moments, sex scenes or not, and establish the mood. It can be used to make characters or moments more iconic, while at the same time help to establish a brand's identity. Music can transform how watchers perceive and connect with JAV. There might be difficulties and new challenges to tackle, but I think there's only good to be had with putting more melodic tunes into these adult videos. Tell me, what do you guys think about putting more music into JAV?

Agreed.. I believe NTR movies/videos deserve more music too as it can sometimes be dark.
