Are the New JAV Fans Luckier? Or Was it Better Then?

Published : February 12th, 2026 Written by jmsorry

I’ve been watching JAV for more than twenty years now. My first real exposure came from a friend who had a clip of Sora Aoi (something I’ve talked about in a previous blog). Since then, I’ve seen actresses come and go, watched image quality evolve from grainy clips to pristine HD, and witnessed forums, communities, and entire fan cultures rise up and quietly fade away.

Recently, while reading Fried Chikan’s blog on who deserves the title of the S1 GOAT, I found myself comparing different generations of actresses, and the kinds of videos that defined each era for me. This inevitably brings up the recurring question: with all the talk about increasing regulation and industry executives sounding pessimistic about the future of JAV, are things actually worse now?

At the same time, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of talent available today. There are more actresses, more releases, and more niches than ever before.

So all things considered, do new JAV fans have it better? Or was JAV truly better in the past?

Let’s break it down, piece by piece.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Actress quality and quantity

Beauty, as we all know, is rather subjective. But I think you would agree if I say that there are simply more S-tier actresses today than, say, in the 80s or the 90s.

That’s not to dismiss earlier generations. The 2000s alone gave us once-in-a-generation beauties like Mihiro, Tina Yuzuki, Maria Ozawa, and many others.

Going back even further, the industry had icons like Ai Iijima and Kaoru Kuroki, women who didn’t just elevate JAV, but crossed over into mainstream recognition and reshaped how the industry was perceived.

Kaoru Kuroki in particular was pivotal. Her cultural impact is on a completely different level compared to modern stars like Yua Mikami, who, despite immense popularity, haven’t quite reached the same level of mainstream significance. That kind of crossover fame was rare, and it meant something different back then.

View Spoiler

That said, I’m talking here about sheer volume. And in that regard, there’s no denying that actress quality has inflated over the years. In the past, an actress as striking as someone like Yumi Yatsugake or Shion might come along once every three to five years. Today, studios debut wave after wave of newcomers who already have the face and body of a potential star.

Fans are spoiled for choice now. In fact, the abundance has become a double-edged sword: many actresses with genuinely above-average looks end up getting lost in the crowd simply because there are so many of them.

A big reason for this is that studios have become far more aggressive and selective with their scouting. JAV is also much less sleazy than it used to be. These days, a good-looking aspiring actress can walk into an agency and pursue a career relatively openly. That simply wasn’t the case in the past, when studios operated more discreetly and becoming a JAV actress carried a much heavier social stigma.

That said, one downside of the modern era is a lack of variety. There’s a noticeable bias toward certain traits: big breasts, pale skin, and very conventional Japanese facial features. Personally, I’d love to see more unconventionally attractive women in the industry. But that usually requires studios to take risks, and risk-taking isn’t exactly encouraged in today's mass-production environment.

Still, when it comes to actress quality and quantity alone, it’s hard to argue against the present. New fans absolutely have it good in this department.

Accessibility and subtitles

Porn has never been easier to access than it is today. Even mainstream social media platforms are filled with cheap thrills and suggestive content. This level of accessibility is a relatively new phenomenon. In the past, JAV was far from convenient, limited to imported VHS tapes or CDs, and even during the early days of the internet, acquiring or streaming adult content required effort and intent.

Closely tied to accessibility is the issue of subtitles. As recently as five to ten years ago, finding subtitled JAV titles was nearly impossible. Non-Japanese fans had little choice but to rely on visual cues and non-verbal communication to understand what was happening on screen. While following the plot is hardly necessary to enjoy a JAV title, the lack of linguistic understanding meant missing out on many subtle and often juicy layers of context.

That is no longer the case. Today, companies such as Zenra provide high-quality subtitles across a wide range of titles. On top of that, fan-made subtitles, while often inferior in accuracy and nuance, are becoming increasingly common. Modern fans are far better equipped to appreciate the finer details of JAV, and as a result, they arguably get more out of each viewing experience.

More videos per month

This one’s quite clear: the JAV industry today is massive compared to what it once was. According to Statista data, the market experienced steady growth prior to the pandemic and appears to have stabilized and recovered in the years following COVID.

In the 1980s and 1990s, many JAV production houses were small and operated in legal gray areas. These companies tended to fly under the radar from production to distribution. Fast forward to today, and most major JAV studios operate as fully legitimate, mainstream businesses. This legitimacy allows them to scale production significantly and cater to both performers and audiences.

The result? More videos, more genres, and far more choice for newer fans.

Social media

Before the rise of social media, JAV fans had virtually no access to their idols. Actresses existed only through print magazines, DVDs, or television appearances. Today, many top actresses maintain an active social media presence, giving fans a chance to interact—however briefly and professionally, with the people they admire.

Of course, this may not necessarily be a good thing. In the past, the distance between actress and audience created a sense of mystique. JAV idols were largely inaccessible, and that inaccessibility was part of their charm.

Now, with more of their private lives on display, actresses are also more vulnerable to scrutiny, backlash, and harassment. The Ai Hongo incident is a clear example. Her popularity extended beyond JAV into streaming, which exposed her to wider, and sometimes more hostile audiences. When she was seen dating in the U.S., the backlash was swift and intense. Such uproars were far less common in the past, when actresses enjoyed greater privacy.

All things considered, this category feels like a draw.

Fan-to-fan interaction

In the past, watching JAV, or porn in general, was often treated as a dirty secret. Finding someone to openly discuss it with was difficult, and dedicated forums or blogs were rare.

Today, fan-to-fan interaction is everywhere. Online communities, social platforms, and even real-life conversations allow fans to discuss their favorite titles, genres, and actresses freely. These shared discussions add another layer to the experience and help fans feel part of a broader community.

This is an undeniable win for modern JAV fans.

Regulations and risk-taking

A bigger industry usually means a bigger crosshair from the government and other authorities. Sure, regulation means a safer industry, which benefits all those involved, from the staff to the on-camera talents. However, this also means there is lesser risk-taking involved during production.

One obvious casualty on the top of my head are the outdoors JAV videos. In the 2000s, daring outdoor shoots were far more common. Today, many studios have abandoned the genre entirely or resorted to excessive self-censorship to remain compliant. While a few “outdoor-adjacent” titles still appear, most producers choose to play it safe.

Even more concerning are rumors of further restrictions, such as potential bans on real cumshots or creampies. As authentic bodily fluids content becomes increasingly rare, this spells bad news for fans of bukkake, gokkun, and breeding-focused titles.

So, is this a good or a bad thing? Again, it depends on your perspective. I believe regulations are necessary in any industry. However, I think some balance can be arrived at without compromising creativity, variety, and authenticity. For many producers and directors, that balance is becoming harder to maintain, given the shrinking space that is available for them.

I’ll have to give it to the older fans for having experienced a wilder and more creative JAV scene. The directors are given more space to improvise, come up with the most bizarre ideas, and execute them.

As an example, take this video by the legendary JAV director KAMBE TARO, where a single man find himself in a Kafka-esque scenario: 100 women invades his house. Of course, there's a lot of sex involved, but the most fun parts are when the man was thinking of how to organize the insane number of females inside his house. He sorts them by breast size, problematizes the toilet situation (he only has one), and pulls out his hair cleaning up after each meal. It's ridiculous funny and bizarre, and I imagine it would be impossible to see something of this kind to come up today.

The verdict: the new JAV fans have it better, alright

But us old heads do not have to lament: we have all the reason to pull out a nostalgia nut. Yes, there is a lot to be excited about in the current JAV season, but there also mountains of good content to look back on.

Are you a new fan or an old head? Do you think new JAV fans have it better, or do you prefer the old JAV industry? We would love to hear your thoughts!

I’ve been watching JAV for more than 15 years, and for me it isn’t even close: modern day is by far better. Make no mistake, the past has many classic moments and titles and especially stars that are eternal, but compared to today, the volume and spread of quality is just incomparable. The past (and here I’m talking about anything in the very early 2010s and prior) had a sort of innocent charm for sure and it’s fun to revisit from time to time, but I often find myself getting a bit bored after a while. I feel today’s super stars (the likes of Saika Kawakita, Remu Suzumori and Mio Ichikawa) and scores in between have a quality most of the older stars didn’t have, and that’s authenticity. They seem more present and happy to be doing what they’re doing, and I think that’s because the stigma that always surrounded JAV has largely subsided. Many of them now apply to do JAV and are often fans, rather than being scouted and then getting swept up in something larger than they had anticipated and ultimately getting in over their heads. These days as well even a moderately successful starlet can build a sizeable social media following, which means they can almost absolutely not be fucked with and abused or exploited or whatever. Make no mistake, the likes of Rio and Tsubomi and Yuma Asami are all timers whose works I will never tire of, and to their credit they don’t shy away from their time in JAV, but today’s stars feel more natural and more relatable than ever before. That’s just my two cents.

Baked In

Interesting question, but does it really matter? For the old-timer, a bit of a nostalgia trip. For the newest audience, the past means little. Overall, the adult video business is like baking bread. A new loaf just out of the oven, everyone wants a piece. It’s wonderful, warm and fresh. Tomorrow, it’s good. The next day, it’s toast with jam. What have you done for me today?

The categories for judgement seem random and perhaps some even irrelevant.

“Actress Quality”?

The only actress criteria mentioned is physical attractiveness. There are always more and less beautiful women. What I want to see is in the name — actress! Can she act? Does she make a convincing show that she really loves sucking that dick? Do I believe she’s an animal in heat wanting that hard dick pounding her pussy? Some of the most effective performers I’ve ever seen have mediocre physical characteristics. It’s just like IRL — sometimes that not so lovely one in the bunch is absolutely the best fuck!

“Access”

When I was sexually primed I owned a small 8mm movie projector. The films I had came through “brown paper wrapper” mail order outlets advertising classified ads in the back of titty mags. To watch a little smut, I had to get the projector out, pin up a sheet on the wall, thread a movie through the projector and watch a badly lighted and grainy black and white image flickering on the wall in a dark room at night. Usually eight to 15 minutes. Today, I get much better content with a couple of taps on a screen anytime and any place. So, yes, better access, for what it’s worth.

“Translation”

Especially for JAV, subtitles are great, and it’s the value proposition for me with Zenra. JAV is generally far more story-oriented than other offerings. Also, the cultural norms are not always obvious to Westerners, so watching is a real handicap with no translation. I presume this will improve as I’ve seen some subtitling that borders on the imaginary — hard to see any credibility when a subtitle is offered and absolutely nothing was said! And maybe after I’ve watched 10,000 or so more, I’ll be able to speak Japanese. Already I know two words!

“Capacity”?

More videos per month? If so, does it matter to a viewer? The market value cited does not seem to support a fact that more videos are being released each month. Perhaps they’re just priced higher. The source cited says “...market size is based on the amount paid by consumers.” That number translates to less than $6 per capita per year, a seemingly paltry sum. If true, it would seem to suggest that a small segment of the market is responsible for a substantial portion of the total outlay.

“Social Media & Contact”

Yes, it can seem like contact with performers is possible. While it may be satisfying for some viewers, it is usually set up for the benefit of the performer — sales of merchandise or simply “tribute” contributions. I’m not sure it’s better. In my life there have been two or three actresses I was attracted to, and I actually had little trouble getting in touch with them — years before any electronic media came along. We had pleasant interchanges and in some cases became very friendly (never to the extent of sex though!).

“Regulation”

Government regulation will always be with us. Usually it’s more political than helpful. Damn that stupid pixelation! I personally do not believe this particular industry requires any more regulation than any other workplace. Anything plainly illegal should have no place in the system. Beyond that, c'est la vie.

Thank you for the great insights! It’s nice that you were able to establish contact with that pornstar. I agree that most social media nowadays is just a front, they do not necessarily provide access to the actresses.

Recently a number of US states and a few countries of note have enacted age verification requirements for adult sites. On the US front at least, legal experts both within and outside of our industry do not believe any will pass a constitutional test. However, since these laws currently are on the books and thus have the ability to be enforced, we are choosing to comply with them at this point in time.

ZENRA uses Bluecheck.me, a third party verification service, to perform this important task easy to install filtering software does infinitely better.

Information used in the verification process is not stored on our servers. Phone number and address verification is instant and uses database cross referencing (no calls, no SMS messages, nothing mailed to the address). ID verification takes about one minute and is performed 'blind' on Bluecheck's side where the ID is reviewed by someone unaware of what service the submitter is attempting to access.

Regardless of what method you choose, it costs you nothing, but does increase the cost of our operations in order to somehow make the internet a 'safer' place.
