Inner Works: the Debut Title

How come sometime a super-hottie debut with a smaller studio?  How do top studios compete for high quality meat?  The whole recruiting new girls process is a big topic, today we look at just a particular step: let's say we have a new girl who has signed a contract with a talent agency.  What happens between now until the first day of filming? 

Now that our girl Janedoe has signed a contract with a talent company SweetDeal Inc, first SweetDeal has to invent a persona for Janedoe.  Obviously she needs a new name (now she is Ima Nakeda), also a birthday (and astrologic sign), birth place, vital statistics (in the old days, a blood type is also invented, nowadays shoe size) and a whole backstory (a small town girl coming to Tokyo for easy money and glamorous excitement).  A set of photos is taken, including nude shots, showing clients that she has no tattoos, major birthmarks or skin disease (don’t take such things for granted).  Then the package is sent to prospective studios.  Here is the second piece of work, a smart agency wouldn’t send every new girl to every studios.  Based on their experience and Miss Nakeda’s looks, figure, voice and mannerism they can judge, say some studios would not give her a chance, other studios would not be good enough for her.  On the other hand, the new girl may also have some idea of her own.  For example, certain studio may be known for abandoning a talent rather easily, that would be a bad choice for a girl devoted to a full career.  Another type of girls want only some quick cash but not the fame (notoriety) of a successful career, so they would actually prefer some minor studios with low profile.  For some cases, multiple personas are fabricated for the same biological human being so she could simultaneously debut for multiple dissimiliar studios.

After the targeted studios receive the promotional package for Ms Nakeda, some, hopefully all of them (good reflection that SweetDeal knows what they are doing) would reply with an invitation to an interview.  Now there may be a lot of wild imagination when fans think about JAV interviews.  But the reality is that JAV interviews are less salacious than interviews or casting couch in mainstream modeling and acting.  One thing is, for JAV, the girl will strip naked or almost naked, but mostly it won’t last more than a minute or two, and there is no touching.  Nowadays often the whole interview is recorded on video to prove that it’s all very boring and professional.  The executives and producers would have a conversation with Ms Nakeda, maybe ask her to sample some dialog lines (most useful to see if she could play a range of stereotype roles: naive girl-next-door, slut, teacher, dominatrix etc).  Of course in the process Ms. Nakeda is also getting a clearer impression of each studio.

After all interviews are done, some (or all, or none) studios will make her an offer.  Then Ms. Nakeda (with advice from SweetDeal) will choose one (or two, or all) offers to accept.  Of course if more than one contracts are to be signed, all the involved studios have to agree to it.  Sometimes the studios would suggest or request some minor change to Ms. Nakeda’s persona or backstory, but in general this is an easy negotiation and compromise.  

Finally the one or multiple studios will schedule a filming date, the rest is all pretty boring and mechanical (except for what happens in front of the camera, hopefully!)
