Opinion - You Can’t Escape the Past: How Minami Aizawa/PIXY is Moving Away from Porn

Minami Aizawa the…

Minami Aizawa was an AV actress under Idea Pocket for about 7 years. A veritable star during her time, she bowed out in 2023. Since retiring she has stayed in the public eye appearing as an entertainment personality, mainly for a Taiwanese audience focusing on food and travel. While she looks toward the future, she would like it if you don’t look towards her past.

From Minami to PIXY

Recently, Minami Aizawa announced that she would not be using that name anymore to move on from her Adult Video persona. Citing mounting questions and inquiries about her AV status, if she would be coming back, and references to her as a ‘former AV actress’. After a small break, she has come back to the public eye as PIXY and has essentially removed traces of her AV past within her social media. Going as far as canceling her work engagements as Minami. Below is a short excerpt from a now deleted post with her explanation.

“It has been over a year since I retired from being an AV actress. I am truly grateful for those who have continued to support me during this time. However, I have no intention of returning to the AV industry. No matter what I do “Minami Aizawa,” I am always referred as a “former AV actress,” and every interview revolves around my past or questions about coming back. I feel as if I am clinging to past glories, which has caused me to completely lose the motivation to continue my activities as “Minami Aizawa” “

Cake Meet Eat and Want

I am sympathetic to Minami’s problem with her porn past especially when trolls are harping on it while she is trying to move on with a mainstream persona. AV and porn actresses are often looked down on for their job and when they want to move on people are still looked down on and stigmatize them. They have difficulty finding work with the danger of being outed always a possibility. The JAV industry with de-listing does help talent get away from their past that is if they choose to stay out of the public eye. For someone like Minami who was a star during her time and had the clout to become an entertainer after it, it’s not so easy.

You can’t have your cake and eat it. In Minami’s case her desire to be an entertainer or influencer or what have you can’t coexist with her refusal of her past. She is known to the public as Minami Aizawa the AV actress by fans and media that want to work with her. When people interview her or talk to her are they supposed to not mention her AV past at all? It’s what people are most interested in, it’s a job that’s quite uncommon. If anything this change hurts her visibility and her future media prospects.

We’ll see some AV actresses who will de-list their works but stay in the public eye. While they may have their reasons that just hurt their media presence. Looking at it purely from a self-gain point of view; the works can bring in new fans and keep your name relevant. I could also get into a whole side discussion on de-listing and how it betrays the support from fans but that is for another day. Either way keeping your name out there can help your visibility which is important as a public figure.

Moving Forward Post Porn

Minami isn’t the first Adult actress to try to make it after retiring from porn and she won’t be the last. Kaoru Kuroki, a name from ages ago, became a late-night TV regular and an icon for female sexuality. From today we have Mana Sakura and the prolific writing with works adapted into mainstream film. However, for figures that broke into mainstream entertainment post-porn, there are even more examples. There’s Sora Aoi, Maria Ozawa, Kirara Asuka, Ai Uehara, and Yua Mikami. In western porn, we have Sasha Grey, Stoya, and Adrianna Chechik who have stayed in the public eye but away from adult work.

However, one figure managed to be even more popular once she left porn and that was Ai Iijima. An old name that only old men and amateur porn historians like myself will know of today. She was active in porn in the early 90s with a short career, she found massive success outside of it. Her semi-autobiographical novel, Platonic Sex, was a best seller that was translated into multiple languages and was adapted into a TV series and movie. She became a regular on variety shows and could even boast of having dinner with a future Prime Minister.

What these ladies have in common was that they did not let go of their porn past entirely. Some like Kirara are largely divorced from it despite still going by the same name. Some like Ai Uehara lean into it and still talk about their previous life. Most of them also still go by and are known primarily by their stage names. And I don’t doubt they get people constantly asking for their return or losing out on work because of their past. Adriana for one lost out on a big streaming event due to hers.

Lose/Lose Situation

It’s easy for me to say she’s making a mistake but Minami is in a no-win situation as a former adult actress trying to make it as a mainstream personality. If she keeps the name, people will still expect Minami the AV actress and if she loses the name, people will still see her as Minami the AV actress. Still in my opinion I think her name change will only makes things more difficult for her in the future not less. While I may have been critiquing Minami’s name change decision, I am still rooting for her. I was a big fan of her AV work and want to see her succeed in the future be that as Minami, PIXY, or whoever.

This is a great post. And there are some great interviews with actresses that not only can't find work, it makes other aspects of their life complicated as well because of the bias. Every actress needs to know going into the industry that being and adult actress is forever.

PS - I'm an old man and actually have all of Ai Iijima's videos.

A major problem is less than they were 'former porn stars' and more that it seems like during that time few have amassed any marketable skills. Blog writers and others are aware of my views already, but the 'exclusive' performer path many a big name take seems less a way to keep oneself in demand while simultaneously slowly but surely honing one's acting capabilities and more masquerading as a top-tier adult video star when in reality spending perhaps two days in any given month doing actual adult video work. The remaining 28 seem to be spent on gosh knows what though advanced studies in Aristotelian psychology and mastering COBOL are probably not endeavored.
