Oppaira's 2020 Debut Review Roundup - 2 Years Later
Hey everyone, welcome to the second year 2020 debut roundup. I'll be going over my thoughts again on some actresses a couple of years after their debut and doing a bit of an analytical dive into some data I've got recorded. This is one of the few posts I can do where I can nerd out a bit with the data (as weird as that is when talking about porn) - I promise it won't get too dry. With that said let's get started.
Overview & Data
As we can see from the chart, of the 35 actresses I reviewed here 23 are still active, for a total of about two thirds. One of the things I was interested in finding out was whether or not I was doing a better job of watching actresses that weren't going to up and quit. If we take a look back to the 2019 roundup, we can see that of the 21 I watched there, 8 had retired. The number was a little bit higher in terms of debuts retiring, but it's also worth noting that the sample size is bigger here. The biggest thing is that the number of same year retirements went down considerably, which is a really key thing. It's very hard to predict long term success so I think cutting out the actresses that seem poised to retire at any time is a bigger deal.
Another thing I wanted to check out was how many videos of debuts I had seen by this time and then compare it to other years. Was 2020 a good year for debuts relative to other years? 2019 was clearly the peak year thanks to some major stars, but 2020 wasn't that far behind. 2018 looks like it was really low but in reality I actually only watched seven debut actresses compared to the 35 that I did in 2020. So actually, the stats per actress are way, way higher in 2018. That makes some sense to me since the fewer actresses I watch the more I can watch of them.
Above I have three graphs outlining the actress I watched and what percentage of the debut space they took up. As you can see, 2018 had such a huge cluster with Touka Rinne, who went on to become one of my all-time favourite actresses, more than any of the other debuts. One of the interesting things we see is that after the first few actresses (about 2-4), there's a sharp decline in how much I watch them. It's pretty obvious that after all of this, I just find the couple of actresses I like and gravitate toward them, leaving the rest in the dust. Remember that this is looking at it two years after the fact, so the data is far more mature than just a single year after (and it will be fun to look at the one year data and see how it compares).
Now, you might be wondering how they compare against each other, which is a fantastic question. So here I've got a chart below that shows exactly that.
As I mentioned above, Touka really did blow away the competition and it's not close. She might have tied Kaho Imai in the first year and Hana and Yuria were not far behind, but boy did she crush it in year 2. We can also observe a general trend that I find myself watching fewer videos of the most popular actresses year over year, especially if you compare 2020 to 2019. Part of that appears to be from watching a bigger spread of actresses but I think it's also just the quality of debuts going down. I haven't come across someone as nice as Touka since, and the trio of S tier debuts from 2019 are still better than the 2020 debuts.
Phew, that was a lot of data. I know I promised some non-data parts and now's the time, so let's go look at that.
Retirements
Moa Maeda definitely stands out as the number one retirement for me. She was still getting her feet wet in the industry when she did and I had a lot of hopes for her. She reminded me of a younger Touka Rinne and someone that attractive is just hard to come by. What makes it surprising is that I think Moa had a lot of potential given how attractive she was. When she started freelancing I figured she had her pick of the litter and yet it was not long after that she retired. I wouldn't say she was ever that great but she was getting good opportunities before she left with studios like Oppai, Fitch, Wanz Factory, Honnaka, and Moodyz. She definitely could have had a solid career if she had been interested and it makes me sad that she left.
Late Watches
Ririko Kinoshita stands far above the rest as my premier late watch. I've spoken about her at length and why she's one of my favourites right now, so it should really come as no surprise to see her here. It's interesting though that I never bothered with her during the year, which I think looking at what I was doing in 2020, my preferences changed quite a bit. I've mentioned just how many videos from Madonna I've seen this year and I have a feeling that if I were to do 2020 debuts all over again, Ririko would have been someone I watched. Hard to tell if I might have written her off early in her career or not though.
Himari Kinoshita is also one of the more pleasant late watches I came across. Having such a juicy ass makes her very compelling as an actress. There are a lot of ways an actress can be enjoyable, whether they're well rounded or spike a certain category like this. Himari is someone that may not wind up among my all-time favourites but it's hard not to enjoy her ass. I encourage everyone to read my in-depth review of her as you'll probably agree with me on that butt.
Others
June Lovejoy is easily one of the most iconic actresses in recent years. It's not every day you get a white actress in JAV that is actually capable of speaking Japanese to a level that's useful in videos. Even if you haven't been a huge fan of her as a performer (and I wouldn't hold it against you), it's hard to argue with someone as unique as she is. I personally haven't been a huge fan of her, I'd rather watch Western porn if I'm going to watch an American actress, but domestically I can see her uniqueness being a bigger selling point. As a Westerner though, she's been really amazing for the industry. Her YouTube is full of amazing content that someone like myself can actually enjoy, and even if I don't watch much of her videos I can really appreciate all she's been doing.
Yume Nikaido (now Ai Hongo) is also still the shining light at Faleno. I haven't exactly been the biggest fan of hers, which I think is more about the state of Faleno rather than her as an actress. I keep hoping that Faleno will do something interesting but that hasn't been the case. I think more and more that the problem is not so much with the content but the quality of women they have there. Faleno has always come off as S1 2.0 but just doesn't have the quality roster that S1 has. Yes, I think the women at S1 are more attractive, but I think at the same time the pure number at S1 is also a big factor; even if not everyone is worth watching regularly, the size makes it so I don't have to be annoyed when someone has a bad release since I can go watch a different actress instead. Faleno keeps doing the whole "hope that the actress is nice enough that people will watch them" but it's just so hard without the huge roster a studio like S1 or Madonna have. I still have a lot of hope for Faleno and Yume and I'm sure I'll be watching her, just not nearly as much as I might have predicted.
Nenne Ui is someone I have very mixed feelings about. She hasn't really done a lot to prove herself as one of the top actresses out there. In fact, most of her content is for studios like Hunter where she's starring alongside other mediocre actresses as well. I find it a bit surprising because she is somewhat unique with those glasses she has, not to mention her big boobs and nice bush. The big thing I've found from her is her ability to deepthroat is quite nice, as evidenced from her Nao Masaki video for E Lab. You do tend to see B tier actresses like her doing more rough stuff (because fans want it and the top tier actresses don't need to do it), which I think further sets her apart. Part of me still wants to be a bit hopeful for her but another part of me accepts that two years in, this is probably not going to get any better, and she's just not really worth bothering with.
Favourite Debuts
Suzu Matsuoka is a debut I've come to enjoy. I had favourable first impressions of her and a lot of that has remained. Where I would say Suzu has had some trouble is in the opportunities she's received. Suzu has worked exclusively with Prestige and their labels and they don't have a very good track record of being interesting. I've personally found so many of her videos feel like the same low effort video, having sex in a hotel or something similar with no plot. It's sad because my propensity to watch Suzu has effectively always exceeded how much I actually do. She's pretty, has a nice body (including a pretty solid ass), and can deepthroat quite well. I think I would like her a lot more if she wound up elsewhere or doing different things, but even still she has wound up being one of my favourite debuts.
Aka Asuka is easily one of my favourites from the year. I think it's probably not that surprising that someone who has huge tits and is slightly mature for her age is a favourite of mine. I've been finding lately that I'm not as big of a fan as her style of performing has started to get cemented and isn't great. That being said, S1 is still a solid studio and she's my most watched debut from the year. I would be very curious to see where she falls a year or two from now and it will be especially interesting to see how she stacks up against other S1 debuts. I've got some interesting content planned around her so we'll be seeing more of her for sure.
Hana Himesaki is probably my favourite debut of the year. She had a bit of a rocky start with some bland stuff over at SOD but she's since blossomed into one hell of an actress. I think she's really taken the bratty, younger vibe and run quite well with it. My favourite videos of hers have capitalized on that personality and it's just such a good look for her. One of the issues is that they don't utilize her personality as much, often defaulting to more generic schoolgirl videos instead. I still think she's got a lot of room to grow as an actress which is great considering how awesome she is already.
Conclusion
I hope you've all enjoyed this retrospective on 2020 debuts. I hope there wasn't too much data analysis that made it hard to enjoy but I'm glad I went through it and came up with some easy to consume charts. I'm a huge fan of looking back and trying to see what conclusions we can draw from my habits, because I think there are definitely some major things to think about:
- Even though I watch up to three dozen debuts the vast majority of them are a waste of my time to even bother with. The decline is quite steep after the biggest names. It suggests putting more emphasis on picking the right ones rather than volume.
- The data seems to suggest more recent debut years aren't as good as previous years, and I'll be very curious to see where 2021 stacks up (I haven't looked at it yet) as well as this year's debuts.
- It looks like my emphasis on waiting until the second half of the year to check out debuts works, since I review fewer actresses that retire quickly.
Be on the lookout for a 2021 version of this post in the near future, and definitely be on the lookout for some 2022 debut reviews as well.
