Does Story Really Matter in JAV?

There are some JAV that try to implement a story and often try to treat it as an important part of the experience, as opposed to only considering the adult scenes as the central focus. JAV with a focus on romance between characters is one prime example of this, as it allows watchers to see characters connect on a number of different levels, and makes their inevitable sex scenes feel more impactful. Ones that focus on affairs and "forbidden relationships" can also feel just as intense, as such secrecy adds an extra layer of "excitement".

There's also "teacher/student" or "boss/subordinate" dynamics that we often see, and such movies require time to establish said power dynamics, which end up making the adult scenes more meaningful.

Ordinary situations can also be made far more stimulating by the introduction of a story into the movie, such as works with maids/butlers: it could start with a regular work relationship but end up transitioning into something more lewd. JAV with medical staff or therapists can also be made more alluring as it helps blur the line between fantasy and reality, which in turn makes the viewing experience more erotic.

Some studios are well-known for delivering JAV with high-quality storytelling - such brands are appreciated for these efforts and they cater to fans who specifically desire cinematic experiences rather than just adult content.

While this is something I believe to be a lesser point, there's also the fact that storytelling helps to make a JAV stand-out. JAV with a complex or layered story is very much a rarity, so when a movie attempts one, it can help garner attention, and possibly sales, all whilst giving viewers a more cultured view of the medium, and showing them that JAV doesn't have to simply just be hardcore sex scenes one after the other. JAV can be an artful medium when it wants to be, but it depends on what the viewer wants out of it.

Most JAV pass over the possibility of having a story entirely, instead limiting it to what little is needed to get into the adult scenes quickly. This is due to JAV mostly being regarded as a form of sexual gratification meant for watchers to masturbate to - so it's only common sense that such productions want to immediately give the watcher what they want as soon as possible.

As JAV is meant to be sexual gratification, those who prefer non-story JAV naturally don't want to wade through half an hour of dialogue and story before getting to what they actually want to see. Porn in general often chooses to emphasize the intercourse and perversion, so a lot of watchers also expect JAV to have this perspective.

Continuing on the last point - instant gratification is known to work no matter the medium, so why deviate? JAV is a business like anything else, and if getting right into the sex without any story or character development helps secure sales, then naturally creators are going to make use of that formula. It also helps cater to the demand of "quick consumption", which fits in well with similar content such as streaming and other instant digital content.

Another appeal of non-story JAV is the fact that it allows the watcher to more greatly focus on an actress' beauty and physical performance. The main attraction of such JAV is usually the performer and not the story, so the actress' body and charm are often emphasized. When a watcher is preoccupied with, say, how much a character has gone through and has finally found love, they probably don't care as much about the fact that the actress is not very good at sucking dick. Popular actresses might also be utilized to this effect to try and garner sales.

Another great part is that acting skills aren't as necessary in such JAV, just the actress' ability to take part in erotic activities. They aren't hampered by poorly written dialogue, and often the atmosphere feels more casual and less filtered. Plot-less JAV allows performers to express themselves physically and emotionally in a pure way.

JAV that aren't dependent on story are also less restrained by the narrative - they can explore diverse scenarios and fetishes without having to make it fit with the characters, and can move into scenes with vastly different fetishes/scenarios without needing an explanation or proper transition. Imagine starting a movie with a cheating scene, having a sex scene with clowns, then with dinosaurs, and then ending on a massive lesbian orgy and trying to make it all make sense by the end of it - of course, a story that tried to do this could be praised simply for the attempt, or perhaps for attempting to do so in a comedic fashion, but regardless - no easy feat.

Other aspects such JAV can focus on include unique camera angles and POV techniques, unique locations and unconventional settings, as well as dynamic transitions between scenes. Sure these could be implemented in a story-driven JAV, but often it has to be done in a way that makes sense - a JAV focused solely on sex isn't limited by this. This can give a work a sort of stylized flair to it, making it unique in a way that pushes it beyond the realm of a normal pornographic work.

So, DOES plot really matter? I'm sure you could see this coming, but it naturally depends on the viewer and what they want. Plot and narrative helps make the experience feel more immersive and in-depth, giving meaning to characters, their motivations, and making them feel more alive. Every aspect of the JAV is part of a moving machine, each part complimenting each other and feeling as if they have an important purpose - the sex scenes are not the only thing holding it together.

Plot-less JAV are more for those with a specific goal in mind - sexual gratification. Such films move things along at a brisk pace to get the watcher to what they want, that being highly explicit moments of erotic greatness. Such movies have the freedom to do what they want, explore fetishes, do something absurd or lewd just because they can, and not have to make it all make sense in the end.

Whether a person wants to just experience two sets of genitals slapping together, or witness a movie willing to tell something greater, albeit perhaps at the expense of the sexually absurd yet satisfying - a watcher has the choice to decide which they want, as the JAV industry offers all sorts of content.
