NEETS: An Epidemic

The Pandemic might have died down but there’s another disease spreading around JAV; NEETs. NEETs or Not in Education, Employment, or Training refers to younger people who are economically or socially floundering. It is also associated with Freeters (low-income), Hikikomori (shut-ins), general layabouts, nerds, or a catch-all term for bums. Whatever you want to call them it’s a real social issue worldwide but JAV has a much more enjoyable take on this modern issue. NEETs have become the hottest trend of the year, the next Reverse Bunny suit.

Riko Hoshino: The Saddest AV Actress

Coming in late last year was the saddest event for a JAV actress. Riko Hoshino detailed her lonesome AV event, which went viral, racking up well over 3 million views at the time of writing. Much sympathy was garnered for the sad SOD star. In reality, this was an impromptu event that she set up with little planning or notice. What she did have was an event lined up a few weeks later. So was it a sad lonely event for an underappreciated adult actress or a slick marketing stunt that they pulled to their advantage?

Sumire Mizukawa is Playing All Sides

Meanwhile, we have Sumire Mizukawa who is living her best life while stretching the definition of what exclusive means. At the time of writing, she was currently under contract with Madonna and the European Hentaied/Parasite group and still works extensively on her amateur account with OnlyFans. She’s got a deal in Japan, a deal in Europe, and her own deal. The first time I’ve heard of someone having contracts with multiple porn studios in different countries. Not only that she has been working with Taiwanese and American porn studios from time to time too. I see no reason for Sumire not to have exclusive contracts with every country with a porn industry.

Eimi Fukada’s Bad, Bad, Not Good Year

This was not a good year for Eimi Fukada. A bombshell news reported that she had gotten in trouble with the law for tax evasion. Which came as a surprise when reports of her earnings came out. How she made approximately 150 million yen over 7 years which equals to about 1 million USD overall at 142,000 a year. A charge she claimed was because she believed her agency had handled her taxes. In the same report, they revealed her boyfriend was revealed too which she later responded by saying the two had broken up by then.

IR JAV has a pulse

Recently Interracial JAV has been floundering and seemingly on its last legs. In 2023 by my count, there were about 30-something IR titles made. In 2024 at the time of writing, there are about 25 titles. Not far off from last year. IR JAV was already a small genre before but it looks to be downright niche in the future. While some of these titles have been decent to great, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it disappear in years to come. When the performer Magnum aka Victor left there was a void that has not been filled and doesn’t look like it will be any time soon. Limited interest plus a very small talent pool over there means the end is coming but no one wants to pull the plug.

A strange sightseeing legendary JAV actor and part Lickytung Taku in LA. Hanging out and eating In-and-Out. Fans joked about him hitting up Western pornstars to shoot scenes while abroad. And those jokes became true as we saw him months later in a bunch of scenes with pornstars. Nothing big just those low-budget hotel titles. Not even pornstars are safe from his tongue.

Censors gone Amok

Censors are the bane of JAV. Long-time fans have learned to put up with them but sometimes they are so bad you can’t escape them. But this has nothing to do with genital censors, it’s all about the outside. For some reason, there is a growing trend with scenes shot outside becoming nearly all censored. It’s happened before but it seems to becoming a growing problem. Viewers of Rima Aria and Ena Satsuki’s lesbian unbanning video were treated to a cute date movie that had the outside scenes become virtually unwatchable. The same happened to Akari Mitani and Aika Yamagishi’s video together.

DJ Soda Controversy

JAV is no stranger to controversy. They like taking things from headlines and putting an AV spin on things but they might have chewed on a bit too much as SOD found out. They decided to make a video parodying DJ Soda, a popular female DJ known mainly for her sexy looks and provocative style. The title itself was self-prophesizing as this video found itself under a firestorm of criticism and was later taken down. Coming in during a time when politicians were talking about reworking the AV Law, it just came in at the worst timing. Watching the video and learning about DJ Soda even I found it under poor taste. Shame because it is actually a decent video by Luna Tsukino.

Everyone’s DJ Now

While we are on the topic of DJs and JAV. AV actresses don’t do just one job to bring home the bacon, they have quite a few side hustles. Modeling, actress, singer, hostess, streamer, dancer, MC; they do all sorts of activities in between porn shoots. One job however is looking like the new gig to get into and that’s deejaying. Everyone wants to be a DJ now. Kaho Imai, Konan Koyoi, Alice Nanase, Saryu Usui, Minami Aizawa, Eimi Fukada, Mary Tachibana, Nao Jinguji, Yuna Ogura, and more. Of them all Mao Hamasaki aka DJ Mao has taken it the more seriously with success even retiring this year and moving on to deejaying full time. Are they actually any good, what does a DJ do, do people just like to see hot women start up the party? I can't answer any of these questions.

Who Needs People: AI Porn the Buzzword

AI is the buzzword that we can’t seem to escape not even in our porn. “AI porn” has appeared in JAV and that’s in quotes for a reason. Makers have been using AI as both a tool and a theme. Most are generated faces planted onto real actresses' bodies. To the point, we are seeing AI debuts. Then we have stories and plots that use AI but these are just robot/sex doll stories with a new name. Personally, the technology is not there yet and even then I would like my real porn to be with real people. If I wanted animated porn I would look into that instead.

The Last Mahina Amane Fan Is Given Hope

Finally, we end with some light at the end of the tunnel for one ardent fan. I mentioned in a past Year in Review about a Mahina Amane superfan who has been keeping a fan account alive even though she’s been missing in action for ages now. Well, their thoughts and prayers have been answered and she made a surprise appearance on 8man’s account. Now the question if she is coming back to AV remains to be answered. They did announce that she would be releasing a new photobook. The agency 8man has a great track record of getting talent but not so much as getting them to stay. This situation might be similar to Rara Anzai who made a surprise appearance to sell her new photobook only to disappear quickly afterwards. So while this could be the same case with Mahina, no one tell her superfan. That one reappearance should be enough to give them the strength to go on for years.
