Mistakes JAV Directors Make and How to Fix Them - Part 1

Hey guys, Oppaira back with another fun post. As you know I like writing about all my crazy director ideas. You also know I like critiquing videos and especially the way I would change things. Today I'm here to talk about some common problems I see and offer up my way of fixing them. Take it as gospel because I know better than the people making the videos... okay joking a bit but I probably watch more porn than them and feel qualified to comment. At any rate let's go see.

Lighting is always a big issue for videos and none of them infuriates me more than when a director uses a giant spotlight to light up the scene. Yes, we need it to be bright, but not like that. There is nothing worse than me looking at the actress' face and seeing a giant stupid spotlight in the way. Nah it's cool, I didn't really want to be able to see her face clearly. And the shadows cast around it too were exactly what I wanted. It's even funnier when the cameraman realizes and has to fix his shot because it's all just bright lights in the frame. Do better.

Thankfully this is honestly kind of easy to fix and I've got a couple of suggestions:

1. Put the lights behind another object. It sounds so simple and yet I've seen it and it works really well. Like no joke hide it behind the couch and you can thank me later. Lights will bounce off walls and couches and you'll get enough lighting that it's not dim without the bright light in your face.
2. Use LED strips. A lot more directors are realizing you can put LED strips along the wall or the underside of a desk or something and get similar effects. I find that when the lighting isn't quite as centered it has an effect of not being as distracting. It's not as good as the other solution but it's still much better than a bright spotlight.

Nothing irritates me more than when a director tries to make me feel like I'm the one in the scene and then says psyche. What a jerk when they swap out to non-POV and ruin all the immersion. Give me the POV scene, make me feel like I'm in the scene, and to hell with a position that might look 5% worse (or honestly 10% better). So what it's not the flattering angle, you got me to buy in that I'm the dude having sex, so don't ruin that feeling. Do you really feel like in the above scene it wouldn't still be hot if you were looking down at her ass and you could see her fingers on your nip from the top down? It's so unnecessarily dumb to mess up POV and would be way better to just go all-in.

The solution is downright simple: keep it 100% POV. I know not every angle of a woman will be flattering, I don't care. I'm not watching Julia for her ass but I won't go yelling if your angle isn't the best angle of her ass. Just let me enjoy the idea that I'm the one having sex with her and I'll be happier for it. Literally all you need to do is not fumble the ball, so don't.

Nothing makes me more frustrated than... okay you've heard that spiel before, but it is seriously annoying. And specifically I'm talking about when they leave it partially on so it's not quite covering the boobs but getting in the way. I tend to watch a lot of voluptuous women and care way more about a pair of exquisite boobs than most. If you're gonna tell me the scene is going to have her bra on or in the way and not let them bounce and jiggle, I'm going to be disappointed. It's definitely an "I'm not mad I'm just disappointed" scenario because you could do better. I don't get what the obsession of keeping it on is, to add more realism? I mean maybe, sure, but porn is a visual medium. I need to SEE things that LOOK HOT and get me AROUSED, not boobs failing to bounce because the bra is in the way. Sure, Nanami's boobs are still bouncing a bit, they would bounce better if that bra was out of the way, and you could have just taken the 10 or 20 seconds you needed to take it off and I wouldn't have batted an eye.

Directors need to get more creative with removing the bra. Find ways to make it natural to take the bra off, have the actress not wearing a bra at the start, or honestly just stop and take the bra off. It's not rocket science and they need to utilize a lot more executive judgement in when it should or shouldn't come off. I find I'm much more tolerable when the boobs are smaller, but when it's a massive rack and the bra is just getting in the way, no just stop and remove it. I don't see Sayaka's bra on in the clip despite the rest of her clothes being on, and you know what? I'm way happier because they're set free, and I didn't, not for a single second, go "gee I wish her bra was still there".

I can't count how many times the following happens to me:

• Wow this video is amazing so far!
• Wait why did they leave and go back to the apartment?
• GAH THIS IS STUPID THEY JUST RUINED THE VIDEO

There are way too many videos that just completely give up on the theme for some reason. This happens a lot in konbini videos where they get the need to go back to someone's apartment. Why, because it's more sensual to have sex at home? Maybe, but your video is predicated entirely on a konbini theme and that's what suckered me in. I need the setting. I need the outfit. What I don't need is something super generic that looks like every other video. Especially in more visual mediums like a classroom or a konbini turning into a generic bedroom or love hotel, no, just no. A wise author once said that your story has to end in one of two ways: the way the reader expects it to end, or something even better. Generic theme? If a director says it's better they can leave and never come back.

The clip above? Would you have ever, in a million years, have guessed that Suzu plays a doctor in that clip above? Yeah, not from this scene, because she has no doctor's outfit, is nowhere near a hospital, and the dude ain't sick.

It's real simple so listen up. Don't go home. Don't go to a love hotel. Just stay. You hear that? Just. Stay. That's all they have to do, don't leave the setting, don't change the theme, just stay put. It's so simple it might almost be too simple. Hell, it might be so simple there's no way that's the answer. But I promise you will do way better if you do it like that. Even if you have to adapt the script a little bit, it can be done and turn out well. I mean just look at the clip above, they literally change it so he catches her at work and it's way better off for it. Trust me on this, plenty of great videos have turned out just okay because they bungled the vision.

I love risky content and in fact my all-time favourite series contains a ton of risky content. When the girlfriend is cheating on the husband knowing he's just a few feet away in the background, oh baby. One of the problems with that is that you need to ensure it's the right level of risk. Not risky enough and it feels like the risk isn't there, but equally problematic is when it's too risky. If you're having loud sex while all the guy has to do is turn around to catch you, that's a little too much. Don't know about you guys but that clip looks like he's practically looking in their direction, hard not to notice what's going on.

Directors should come up with a simple process to determine if it's too risky. It's not even that hard to do. Have the person try and catch you and see how long it takes. Then you can situate yourself in a way where you won't get caught that quickly because you tested it. The Alice clip above is this sweet spot where the actress is turned away and unlikely to go look at them, but they're positioned in a way where he could pull up his pants fast enough to not get caught because he's far enough behind the wall, and Alice can cover up in two seconds flat. Give me the risk but for the love of all things holy please make it reasonable.

So that's what grinds my gears. If you've stuck it out then thanks for hearing my old man rants. I don't have the "oh it's tits who cares about anything else" vision I had 10 years ago any more, I'm a grumpy veteran of Japanese porn who loves to complain. It's just so obvious how to fix problems sometimes that I undoubtedly get frustrated with how awful they are sometimes.
