Mai and Yui have been best friends for as long as they could remember.  They’ve always celebrated the day they first met as a private anniversary and soon enough that day was upon them as high school seniors.  Secretly, they both harbored feelings for each other that were more than just platonic and ended up writing each other love letters.

Finally, the day of their anniversary arrived and both unknown to the other decided to also make that the day of their confession.  As their love was thankfully mutual, nearly unchained elation took hold of them after their true feelings were revealed.  This is a story about nonpareil love and reliving the halcyon years of innocent youth.

The final portion takes place in the present day as Yui and Mai, now professional adult film actresses, look back fondly upon their time as schoolgirls and that first wonderful confession.  While they wear various hats when on the clock, they remain the best of friends in real life.

If there ever was a feel-good lovey-dovey Japanese lesbian schoolgirl drama to be the reigning queen of Japanese lesbian schoolgirl dramas, it would without a doubt be WHERE AN INNOCENT LOVE LETTER TAKES US.  I mean for crying out loud:  It pretty much starts with a rooftop confessional!

This author has minimal experience with high schools and rooftops, but as most in Japan are still designed in contemporary Chernobyl fashion with that drab off-white coloring and flat roofs, you're pretty much guaranteed to find open access to said roofs.  Many a drama TV show has taken this semi-private element of schooling and turned it into the western equivalent of hanging around in the stairwells between classes.

The rooftop, where miscreants meet, where hearts are broken, and romantic relationships are birthed.  The latter--the all-important confessional is what kick-starts YUI KAGAGOE's and MAI ARAKI's advancement into same-sex romance.  While WHERE AN INNOCENT LOVE LETTER TAKES US is technically a 'drama', there's not really any strife.  It's more of a cloyingly sweet yuri love story in JAV form and you know what?  That's a good thing.

Director Byakko is a huge fan of innocent lesbian romances and he depicts them wonderfully in his work.  Just earlier this year we showed OUR SECRET SPECIAL PLACE where all the scenes follow a similar stress-free format.  This time instead of each encounter being self-contained, we're treated to MAI and YUI tiptoeing, but always advancing towards a full-fledged lesbian romance.

While there are four sex scenes (though the last is slightly abridged), the play begins somewhat tame but continues to build.  Heck, the first scene taking place in the athletic storage room doesn't even have them strip totally naked (fans of JAV stars in schoolgirl uniform will love this!).  It's later on in the empty classroom where they go all out and it's glorious.

What's more, the final scene breaks the fourth wall.  We're given real access to the real YUI KAWAGOE and MAI ARAKI, real life lesbian friends who exchange real letters of admiration that each reads while the other tears up.  This of course is followed by real lesbian lovemaking full of natural embarrassment.  It's a fantastic way to cap a wonderful title that fans of Japanese lesbians should find a pleasant treat to watch.
